Entertainment & Visual Effects

The special effects used in TV shows and movies enables storytelling in ways previously never thought possible. Monte Carlo 3D rendering is what helps audiences experience dinosaurs walking the earth or hordes of zombies attacking a city. The computational complexity incurred by Monte Carlo-based 3D rendering is an ever-increasing cost center in the modern VFX industry — denoising with Altus denoiser helps VFX pros like you make the most of their sampling budgets helping to tell the stories their audiences want in a fraction of the time without compromising on quality. Altus helps delivers the stories the modern entertainment & visual effects industry wants in less time and with less cost

Reduced VFX Render Times

Rendering complicated scenes with hundreds of textures, millions of models, volumetric effects and ever more complicated shaders simply takes too much time. It’s not as simple as cranking up the quality slider.

Altus denoiser operates in image space — no scene, geometry or texture information is required, which means the sky’s the limit in terms of how complicated you wish your scene to be. We take your renderer’s beauty pass and arbitrary output variables (AOVs), which can be generated for free or at minimal cost with almost all physically-based Monte Carlo 3D ray tracers and path tracers on the market, and create the high quality images & animation your audiences want.

SEAMLESS INTEGRATION INTO POPULAR PROGRAMS

Altus’ high-quality output preserves edges and texture detail. It preserves normals, geometry, displacement, and effects like sand, hair, and fur. It’s temporally stable with animation, preserves motion blur and depth of field, and specifically designed to work with the high dynamic range (HDR) images prevalent through the VFX industry. Altus can suppress fireflies, filter AOVs, to help you seamlessly composite your computer generated imagery (CGI) into any footage helping creators tell stories with the realism that was out of reach before.

To 4K and beyond

A full HD 1920x1080 image has 2.1 million pixels that your physically-based, Monte Carlo 3D renderer must sample. A 4K 3840x2160 image is not twice as hard to create — it’s quadruple the difficulty with as many as 8.3 million pixels that must be sampled. 8K and 16K are around the corner, both requiring 16x and 64x the number of samples compared for the images you may be creating now at full HD.
Can you handle an upgrade to 4K, 8K, and beyond? Altus reduces the samples you need to create high-quality, denoised images and animation making rendering 4K, 8K, and higher images possible with your existing setup without cost-prohibitive upgrades.

Integrate Altus in your VFX pipeline

Altus works with any Monte Carlo 3D renderer. Configure your render to generate the AOVs Altus requires and you can enjoy the benefits of denoising and decreased render times. With minimal IT investment in setting up Altus, you can quickly recoup cost savings through decreased render time. We work with popular software packages used in the VFX industry today, including but not limited to V-Ray, Arnold, and Mantra.

If you’re a pipeline engineer or render engineer with your own custom renderer, Altus is available in software development kit (SDK) form. We provide a C++ binary API available on Windows as a DLL or DSO on Linux/macOS that lets you skip outputting to intermediate on-disk formats and denoise images while still in memory. Automate Altus on your render farm

Altus, when run as a post-process tool, is perfect for integration into the render farm that you have today. You can get the improved productivity gains of denoising without spending any more on capital costs or having to upgrade or change your existing rendering software. Many render farm queue automation software packages come with out-of-the-box support for Altus, including Muster, Royal Render, and Deadline. Learn More >

REMOVE THE WATERMARK

All Altus downloads, including our SDK, are free for evaluation purposes, but insert a watermark over your render. To remove the watermark, purchase the licenses you'll need to get your project finished quickly.
